If you choose to align portrait-orientated objects of the same dimensions to a particular spot at the bottom of a document, the smart guides will only show you alignments for the top of the objects.
If you choose to align portrait-orientated objects of different dimensions to a particular spot at the bottom of a document, then the smart guides will show alignments at the bottom
The inverse holds true for landscape-orientated objects being aligned vertically.
In practical terms, there is little difference, EXCEPT that points on a canvas are the ultimate markers for lining up objects; the bottom, center or top of an object is secondary for creating accurate alignments.
