This 1.0.2.1 update is recommended for all 1.0.2 users and fixes a serious saving issue introduced in 1.0.2 that caused images to be left out of the document.

Comic Life Magiq + Illustrator = woes - 2008/05/26 17:11 Okay, brand new user here to Magiq so it would not surprise me if some of my wishes were actually implemented however upon first use I am not pleased.

-Illustrator documents show up in the Photo/Artwork area but when dragged into a panel cause Magiq to go into spinning beachball mode. VERY BAD.

- Magiq uses the iPhoto database? Please stop! Yuk!

- Need a way to import photos like any other program (i.e. import, place, whatever...) rather than relying on the all-too-space occupying way that it's currently implemented. At the very least allow me to view the list of images by NAME rather than by PREVIEW. It would certainly save on the battery life in my MBP.

- Photo/Artwork area doesn't seem to update when I add images to folders in the list. Seems I have to quit Comic Life Magiq and restart it. Please tell me this is not the way it works.

I had only used the free Comic Life for periodic things but have recently decided to get a little more serious with it. I purchased Magiq and the first half-hour with the program was just frustration after frustration. I've been using Macs for everything from programming to artwork since the 128K. Mac programs generally shouldn't be quite this frustrating right out of the box.

Re:Comic Life Magiq + Illustrator = woes - 2008/05/27 00:55 Sorry for the double-post but alas, the New From Template command appears to have no way to Cancel out of it. Please tell me that it's just a matter of me not seeing the cancel button, of course there are issues with it being to 'hidden' if that's the case.

The move from CL to CLM isn't quite as bad as what Apple did with iMovie and I'm not suggesting that plasq make magiq look like 'every other app' but the interface (resizable, minimizable photo editor[!!]) feels terribly unfinished.

Re:Comic Life Magiq + Illustrator = woes - 2008/05/27 04:45 The "New From Template" command just brings the template selection window to the front. If you don't want to select a Template, just click back on the document window. Is that what you're referring to there?

Why not use the iPhoto database? Many consumers are likely to have their photos in iPhoto and may be accustomed to accessing their photos there (as they do in iWork and iLife).

And, no, the Photo area doesn't work that way There's a small curlicue arrow in the upper right corner of the directory selection window that's for refreshing that view.

I realise that it can be hidden but why the inability to close it or cancel it completely? I like to run a resource tight ship and while you might argue that the window occupies few resources it's more resources than if the window behaved like every other window (i.e. closable). The closability and cancel-ability is arguably a core feature of MacOS. What is the intention of not allowing the user to close the window?

Saw the refresh arrow and was coming back to post my discovery. Thanks.

Okay, sure, most users use iPhoto indeed. My comment was misplaced however I think Magiq's reliance on iPhoto's mechanisms shows too heavily in its UI. It, like the new iPhoto and iMovieHD are pigs when it comes to eating up processor cycles (and battery life). No need for a (cool, awesome, etc...) comic editor to be as reckless.

A simple list would consume far fewer cycles.

There are much more pressing (crashes) issues that need attending to but I would ask plasq to consider a list view for the Photo area of the screen a priority for an update.

I have gotten a lot of enjoyment out of Magiq today but I've had to stay plugged in much more than when I wasn't running Magiq. Normally I run Illustrator, Lightroom, Photoshop and half a dozen other apps and with the addition of Magiq, I'd say my battery life dropped by ~30 minutes.

Granted, I was using the Photo area a lot as I was just experimenting with this new toy but still...if the Photo area has a "display as list" option I could have cut that by a significant amount.

Re:Comic Life Magiq + Illustrator = woes - 2008/05/27 11:42 Hi Kelly,

Thanks for all the feedback - we'll do our best to resolve these issues.

I do have a question about your particular request for a list view.. did you want this view to simply have text in it? And is there another application which behaves in a similar way to what you would like Comic Life Magiq to?

I'd never argue. Each person's computer is theirs to use as they like. Providing feedback to the fine folks at plasq only helps them make that part of it better for you

I wonder how much is the list and how much is the extensive usage of Core Animation, Core Image, etc. I think future 10.5 apps are going to be harder on laptops since the GPU will be "live" more of the time.
