Excellent question, thank you for asking. I realize that my workflow might not be the same as every other Comic Life user's but I tend to grab images one at a time on an as needed basis and thus a command such as InDesign's "Place..." or Mail's "Attach" do the trick for me. I can view the standard open dialog any number of ways and can customize the folder list on the left to allow easy access to my drop folders thus it has all the flexibility I need. With such a command in Comic Works Magiq I could hide the Photo Well and never look at it again  I guess it's my being forced to use the interface that bothers me the most. I believe most actions should be available through the menu bar but of course CLM seems to have put minimal focus on that particular UI element. 
And I apologise for my shoddy terminology, it's been over 10 years since I designed Macintosh applications, long before OS X
