Connection issues - 2006/03/28 20:27 Hi guys,

I'm trying out Wormhole here and I'm having some issues that I've not been able to solve:

Mac (Logic 7.1) < -- > PC (Logic 5.5.1)

The computers are connected directly via ethernet, and the connection is fine (I can access files and ping either computer from the other). 48100-48200 are opened on both machines' firewalls.

When I create channel names in Wormhole, both computers get the channels in the popups, so communication *is* happening in both directions.

Sending audio from the Mac to the PC with Wormhole works, but sending audio from the PC to the Mac doesn't ("not connected"). So I can only send audio to the PC, but I need to be able to send audio back to the Mac to use in an insert loop.

Any clues?

Re:Connection issues - 2006/03/30 01:35 Hmm.. no-one?

Does anyone know what ports and protocols Wormhole uses? I mean, the firewall is definitely open on 48100-200 for both TCP and UDP on both machines.

Mac -> PC works fine in all cases.
PC -> Mac works for channel names but not audio

Why would the Mac see channel names from the PC, but not receive audio data from it?

It's weird, and after many hours struggling to get this to work, if I don't get much joy within the next couple of hours I think I'm gonna have to leave it as "nice idea but doesn't work for me"...

Re:Connection issues - 2006/03/30 02:22 Ok, turning notifications on, on the PC in Logic I instantiate Wormhole, and give it a channel name.

First off, Logic tries to act as a server 0.0.0.0:48100 which I Ok. Then it tries to connect on 239.111.231.77:48101

This is I assume Wormhole trying to make contact. So what is that IP address? My Mac and PC are on 192.168.4.176 and .177 respectively, so what's with the 239.x.x.x address? Is this a multicast message? It doesn't seem to go anywhere, that IP address does not resolve and can't be pinged.

Or is Wormhole for some reason trying to send audio to 239.x.x.x which is why the 192.168.4.176 Mac machine can't receive anything? Or is this a demo restriction or something?

Re:Connection issues - 2006/03/31 14:40 My networking chops are basic and I'll be checking in with my net-admin but I thought maybee this would provide less hops NAT errors

IP over FireWire OSX

I'm sure this also works on the Win Xp side of things... no link though.

I'll post after I get it working

Re:Connection issues - 2006/03/31 21:44 Yeah, I'm sure IP over firewire may offer good performance but it doesn't help solve my issue.

I already have my audio interface connected by firewire so I don't really want to load the firewire bus still further - I really want to get it working over ethernet as it's supposed to. And from all the settings I've made, it should be working.

But I still only get audio flowing one way. The same happens using both Logic and Live as hosts.

I'm just about ready to give up - anything that tales days of troubleshooting to configure probably isn't worth the hassle. I'm amazed (and a little frustrated) that no one here has offered any help though.

Oh well. Maybe I'll give it one last shot next week sometime...

Re:Connection issues - 2006/04/01 02:59 239.xxx addresses are indeed multicast addresses.

Have you seen this in the PAQ :

Q. How can I get rid of "the host is not feeding audio to Wormhole"?
A. If you have a resource saving host like Logic or DP4.5+, plugins which are not feed audio are not calculated. When using Wormhole to receive audio, this can be a problem as then you basically have a plugin which doesn't need input and still creates output. In such a case, use WH2 on another type of track, like a aux track / input track or insert some tiny instrument and use WH2 after that, to have a valid stream of audio. There is something called DummyInst just for that purpose. Get it here: http://www.apulsoft.ch/dummyinst.zip
