Distorted Audio - 2006/11/30 05:22Insight into distorted Built-In audio problem?
Hi, a few weeks ago I suddenly (after several weeks of no problem with this app) experienced a problem with the 'RAX 2.0.2'. All of sudden it's audio, no matter what AU was loaded, was distorted...including it's demo which uses the Apple DLS synth! No other problems were happening in other programs. I proceeded to troubleshoot, upgrading my system to 10.4.8 and testing RAX (even older versions) in a brand new 'clean' test account. Same deal. Then I noticed, that after getting over 15 gb free on my system drive it (RAX) it started working again. BUT, if I run my machine for hours or have sveral app's open then it comes back until reboot. EDIT: As it turns out, it still randomlly (actually most of the time) doesn't work/distorts even with all this disk space and a clean reboot. And again, originally I would routinely run several app's alongside RAX and my drive near full with no problem! Now, most the time it won't even play the demo right after cold boot (and then again, sometimes it will).
The distortion is a 'continously fuzzy, crackling' rendition of the signal, like what a bad connection sounds like or, perhaps more relevant, like a very wrong biuffer setting you might hear in some programs. Another description is a totally maxed-out output even though the volumes look normal.
All relevent software (RAX, Audio MIDI set up) had preferences tossed and reinstallation and testing in a 'virgin' account to rule out haxies/driver problems. All AU's working in other app's.
I never had this before in all my time using a similar set up (the EXACT set up ran RAX for several weeks just fine, even with only 4 gb free on system drive). I have performed a memory test (memtest) on my 2 gb of RAM and ran all manner of Tech Tool tests. No other symptoms are occuring. Logic and other pro app's have no problems.
Anyway, thought I ould throw this out to see if anyone has ever had similar symptoms.I initially had some prompt response from support but in the last weeks I have heard from no one (I was referred to the programmer but have never got a response from him).
Re:Distorted Audio - 2006/12/07 09:28Certainly Turns out we have both been battling Holidays and sickness but the lines of communication are opened.
I tell you, a real head scratcher this one. Rob now has a pretty detailed account of my 'adventures' trying to isolate this problem so will wait for his next reply...thanks for your help in this.
I will add, the resulting waveform looks like either 'bit crushed' or qauntization errors, so it is a true DSP type of distortion as opposed to a simple overloaded gain staging problem. We will see what the 'wizard' has to say.
Re:Distorted Audio - 2007/01/25 06:27FYI, I never heard from Rob again and have have not been able to use RAX since this started all those months (four!) ago. I sent Rob the information and audio of problem and tried to follow up with no response.
Looks like I will have to write this off as a bad investment. ;-(
Re:Distorted Audio - 2007/02/04 20:17Sad to say, I have to weigh-in and say I am starting to have this experience as well. Lately, after a short time I start to get the clipping and distortion when playing files that had worked well previously and once it starts it is hard to eliminate it. This is not good for me as Rax was going to be a significant piece for a performing project but now I find it too unreliable to use and will not be able to wait around for issues to get solved, Fortunately, OnStage from Fluge works with Logic Express as well as Logic Pro and though it is not as elegant in how it works as Rax, it does perform consistently and handles several things that Rax does not... Sorry Guys, I would be happy to come back and give this a try if this program grows a little more and this significant problem gets fixed.
