Re:Wondering about Pricing / Availabilit - 2008/12/25 05:02 I haven't been using Skitch for very long, but so far I like it. If I could make a pricing suggestion, I think the app itself should remain free. No 'pro' tier, just as it is right now, free.

Let's be honest, all it does is make it a little easier/more convenient to annotate a screenshot. Something that's built into the OS already. I won't get LittleSnapper because I simply don't feel an app that reproduces built in OS functionality is a necessity.

Jing gets it right. And it even does video. Free, with the option to upgrade the hosting for a fee.

The hosting service is where you should be focusing a pricing model.

While it's ultimately up to you, the developer, whether you charge for an app, or release it for free... I hope that you'll take into consideration the existence of other competitors that already do the same thing as your app... for free. As much as I like Skitch, I'm afraid if you decide to charge for the app, I'll go back to using the built-in screenshots and annotating in Preview... or Jing. I found Skitch first, so that's what I've been using, but I learned about Jing a few months ago and am quite impressed.

Re:Wondering about Pricing / Availabilit - 2008/12/26 05:43 Hi Jay,

Thanks for the feedback, it's much appreciated.

What kind of features, services in a 'Pro' hosting model would attract you, and others to pay?

For example, how would you compare them to existing services like Flickr?

Many thanks

Keith

Re:Wondering about Pricing / Availabilit - 2009/01/01 11:56 It has been interesting reading this thread after being away for a while. Since you're looking for input on pricing, I'll throw in some thoughts.

You seem to be leaning towards the "freemium" model: offering something for free, but also providing a paid premium option. That's great, provided you think enough people will buy the premium offer.

Personally, I'd be inclined to charge for the app, but make it a trivial amount that people don't need to think twice about ($5-$10). But if you think getting a critical mass will lead more people to the premium offer, then making the app free is okay. You need to run reports on current usage.

You should also pay attention to how Little Snapper goes, even though their market is a bit different. They seem to have enough confidence in the app to charge $39. I think there's a decent size market for a cheaper screencapture utility like Skitch.

I can't really comment on hosting pricing, as I don't wish to use it. (I just want a stand-alone app with precision selection, which I still haven't found.) But offering 10-20Mb free seems a good way to let people trial the service.

Thank you for your considered feedback, it's very much appreciated.

May I ask, what do you mean by 'precision selection' and what would you use it for? What do you use Skitch mostly for?

Thanks again,
Keith

To keep this thread about pricing, I've posted a new topic about precision selection - the ability to select an area to the very pixel without having to squint and move the mouse very carefully.

I use Skitch whenever I want a screenshot (usually an area, not a full window). Sometimes a quick capture is fine (eg. keeping a record of something or reporting a bug), but sometimes I want to use the capture in a document or web page, in which case I want to capture the area accurately.
