I think the reasonable answer would be "How much ya got?!" As with a lot of these computer things, what works well for you will depend on what you want to do. Your average camera nowadays takes some really high resolution pictures. Given that an average page may have 6-7 photos (maybe more if the user's using one image as a background and another as the foreground), all these large images can eat up a lot of memory.
However, you may want to just grab some low resolution images from a website and put some word balloons on them. In that instance, it's reasonable to expect that memory needs won't be as intensive.
So, reasonable depends on what you're doing with it. The "rule of thumb" though is the more you have, the better off you'll be.
