Studying Invention Inventively

If you need help getting started with a history project, then you’ve landed on the right post! Here’s a great lesson plan from Karen, the Technology Integration Specialist at Junipero Serra Elementary School in San Francisco, California. Students researched inventions that all started in San Francisco, and used Comic Life to present all that they learned.
Aaaand they had the chance to have their comics put on display at the San Francisco Library! You can see a slide show of their work on display HERE.

This project meets the 4th Grade History/Social Science Standard for California, and can most likely be easily adapted to other State’s standards.
Objectives:
* Students will research an Invention that originated in San Francisco using the Internet and library books
* Students will create a comic using the program ComicLife showcasing that Invention.  The comic must include:
* The inventor(s) name(s)
* Date of the Invention
* A fact about the Invention
* Comic characters (free, non-copyright graphics)Calfornia State Standards:

4.4 Describe the development and locations of new industries since the turn of the century…

Closure/Check for Understanding

Students presented their comics in an oral presentation to the class using a computer connected to an LCD projector.  We were also lucky enough to have our comics enlarged to poster-size and displayed on the 2nd floor of the Children’s section of the San Francisco Public Library!
